Quality & Compliance

The materials of a chesterfield sofa are key to its quality and integrity. The following criteria must be rigorously observed.

(e) Springs: The chesterfield arm, back and seat must be fully sprung or supported by interwoven webbing.

(a) Frame: The internal frame (other than dowelling) must be 100% hardwood. Beech or birch must be used for all but minor frame elements. Dowelling must be affixed into pre-bored holes.

(b) Padding and Stuffing: Stuffing should be distributed evenly and in layers where required. Examples of appropriate stuffing materials include foams, natural bristle, horse hair, cotton, feather and jute.

(c) UK Manufacture: The chesterfield is a British design and its heritage lies within the United Kingdom. Chesterfield furniture must be manufactured in United Kingdom with at least 90% of materials sourced from United Kingdom suppliers. At least 50% of components must be manufactured from within the UK.

(d) Renewable wood: Hardwood frames must be sourced from renewable resources as regulated by the European Timber Regulation.

Quality & Compliance

As well as being a design heritage, chesterfield furniture is known to last for generations with appropriate care and functions as an independent indication of quality. The following quality rules seek to ensure that the name is used only for products deserving of the authentic chesterfield designation.

(a) Manufacturing and quality guarantee: A guarantee of at least 20 years for domestic use and 10 years for commercial use from manufacturer must be provided in association with the products and services to cover frame construction, repair craftsmanship, and material life (excluding fair wear & tear).

(b) Filling standards: Foams used may be at various densities but must comply with the Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations 1988 or such other regulations as may take their place from time to time, and any other applicable safety regulations or other legislation.

(c) Fire safety: A chesterfield sofa must comply with all relevant UK fire safety regulations in all respects.
